I offer online video sessions for adolescents and adults, providing individual, relationship, and sex therapy where appropriate. I am also trained to provide discernment counseling for couples who may be deciding if they should stay together. I am also trained in EMDR, a specialized treatment modality especially useful for healing past trauma.
We meet one on one via video to discuss anything that’s making your life harder. This might be issues of depression, panic or anxiety, parenting struggles, relationship concerns, past sexual or other trauma, grief and loss, dealing with illness or disability, trouble adjusting to any of life’s changes, or really anything that weighs you down.
Partners attend together via video to work through issues and concerns that may be creating obstacles to having the relationship each wants. These might include issues of communication, conflict, sex, infidelity, loss of romantic love, trust, parenting differences, or other challenges.
Many people have questions about what exactly is involved with sex therapy. To be clear, sex therapy is just a specialized form of talk psychotherapy, with a focus on issues of sexual health and intimacy. No nudity, sexual contact, or sexual acts occur during session.
For individuals, sex therapy might address issues of past sexual shame or trauma, body image, gender identity or sexual orientation, sexual functioning and satisfaction, problematic sexual behavior, sexual pain or anxiety, diminished desire, or any kind of exploration of your personal sexuality.
For partners, sex therapy might include issues like sexual communication and openness, discrepancies in sexual desire, increasing intimacy, healing from infidelity, healing from one partner’s sexual trauma, exploration of kink or BDSM, exploration of open relationship structures, and general enhancement of sexual and relationship satisfaction.
Discernment counseling is a great pre-therapy option for mixed agenda couples, in which one partner is leaning towards ending the relationship, while the other partner is leaning towards working on the relationship. Discernment counseling is not couples therapy; in fact, it is designed to avoid half-hearted (and therefore ineffective) couples therapy.
I work with couples between 1-5 sessions to help gain clarity and confidence about how to proceed with their relationship. At the end of the discernment process, partners will have either decided to end the relationship and move towards divorce or proceed toward a genuine, all out, six month effort at relationship therapy. In rare cases, a couple may decided to continue on as they were, but with an increased sense of peace about this path.
Discernment counseling follows a more structured path than typical therapy, following the approach developed by internationally recognized marriage expert William J. Doherty, Ph.D.
